Chapter 11: The Wraith
The two girls moved the rocks back away from their doorway.
“You’re sure about this?” Clara asked.
“Yes, we’re finally going to settle this, when you can hear his heartbeat, you have to agree that he’s been lying, although, maybe you should just check his pulse.”
“I don’t know why you don’t believe him, Precipice. It’s all magic. He glows all over sometimes, and our tats glow sometimes too, I think we must have some magic.”
“Us?”
“Yes, how else did our tats glow, and when you took down that tough, you might not have noticed, but you were moving so fast I could barely see you. It was magic. He was much bigger than you, and you took him out.”
“Aye,” Precipice pondered. “I did that.”
“And your tat was glowing then too.”
Precipice froze, she hadn’t noticed that at all.
The younger girl moved the board aside so that they could follow the entrance tunnel down to the caverns.
“Come on Precipice, we need to find Túathal, I want to see if he has a heartbeat.”
Precipice followed her sister down to the caves, Túathal was, of course, nowhere to be seen.
“Túathal!” Clara yelled out.
“Yes, Miss Last.” The voice came from behind the two girls, who both turned to face Túathal.
“He wasn’t there a second ago,” Clara whispered to her sister, but the cavern carried the whisper to Túathal’s ears and a slight grin shimmered on his lips.
“Can I listen to your heart beat?” Clara asked.
Precipice nudged her. “Or just feel for a pulse, maybe?”
“Ah, you wish to test my words. Very well.” He held out his hand for Clara, who took his wrist to test for a pulse.
“Nothing,” she said at length.
“Let me try,” Precipice said. “You’re probably not doing it right.”
Taking Túathal’s hand from Clara she spent some time trying to feel for a pulse.
“See, he doesn’t have one,” Clara gloated.
“He has to! Let me listen to your chest,” Precipice ordered.
Túathal rolled his eyes as he lifted his arms wide so that Precipice could listen through the thin cloth that covered him. Precipice tentatively put her head against his chest, but after a second, not being satisfied, she pulled Túathal hard against her ear with a hand shoved up behind his back.
“See!”
After a few seconds, Precipice moved away, staring back at Túathal.
“You can only be a vampire,” the girl accused.
“A what?”
“A vampire, one of the undead. You walk the Earth seeking human blood as nourishment. Have you been turning Clara and I?” Precipice felt her neck for any sore spots where she might have been bitten.
“I’m not a vampire.”
“What else could you be?”
“I’m a wraith.”
“A what?” Clara had backed away and had been hiding behind Precipice when she thought that Túathal might indeed be a vampire. Now she edged forward again to ask her question.
“I’m a wraith. A ghost.”
“You’re not a ghost,” Precipice objected. “We could feel you, and we can see you.”
“Can you now?” As he stood before them lit by the light of Precipice’ cell phone, Túathal’s body slowly dissolved from the light until all that was left was darkness.
